Young Arsenal thrashes Sheffield United in Carling Cup

Arsene Wenger is all delighted with his teenage sensations thrashing Sheffield United by 6 goals in the 3rd round of the Carling Cup. This is the youngest Arsenal team ever with players averaging 19 years. Carlos Vela stole the show with a sensational hat-trick after Nicklas Bendtner started off with a double. The 16-year old Jack Wilshere displayed some fantastic action with a magnificent strike. But the prolific manager has expressed no surprise on the team's superb show because he has been expecting something like this for some time. It is to be noted that the manager has always had the knack of picking prodigies and it has indeed paid off.

New Zealand to tour Bangladesh

New Zealand will visit Bangladesh for three one-day internationals and two Tests. Bangladesh have named the squad for the next month matches against New Zealand. The old 13 players who defected to the ICL ( Indian Cricket League) are not included. Chief selector Rafiqul Alam said that the team would be a combination of young and experienced players. The list includes six new players from their country's cricket academy who have excelled in domestic matches over the past year. Rafiqul Alam added that these players would find a place in the main squad if they perform well. It seems that these players are talented and are very good against good opposition.

Tushar Imran, Rajin Saleh, Enamul Haq and Nafis Iqbal have been recalled to the group. Alam thinks that under the changed circumstances the new team would be the best. The probable players in the Bangladesh squad are Tamim Iqbal, Zunaed Siddiqui, Mohammad Ashraful, Abdur Razzak, Shahadat Hossain, Syed Rasel, Nazmul Hossain, Mahmud Ullah Riyad.

Sachin is back after injury

Sachin Tendulkar,  veteran Indian batsman suffered an injury while fielding in the third Test against Sri Lanka in Colombo. As a result he missed the subsequent one day series. Sachin has been ordered to rest his injured elbow ruling him out of domestic action. Concerns were raised against his fitness for the test series against Australia which is to begin next month. But Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) insists that Sachin will be perfectly fit to face Australia.

The first Test against Australia will begin on October 9 in Bangalore. Tendulkar will not take part in the Irani Trophy, a match between the Ranji Trophy champions and the Rest of India team. Irani Trophy is to begin on September 24. He was dropped from the Irani cup squad on the advise of the physiotherapist.BCCI secretary Niranjan Shah insisted Tendulkar's prolonged rest was merely a precaution. Till then his place will be taken by Subramaniam Badrinath.

India's tour of Pakistan

India will play three Tests and five ODIs in Pakistan, with the first Test scheduled to begin in Karachi on January 13. India will play the second Test at Rawalpindi's Pindi Stadium between January 21 and 25, and a one-dayer at the same venue on February 11. The tour concludes with a Twenty20 international in Karachi on February 19.

Rawalpindi was dropped from the list of host venues for the ICC Champions Trophy forsecurity concerns earlier this year. Several countries expressed concern at touring Pakistan owing to the ongoing security situation. The visiting teams stay at the Marriott Hotel, which is in Islamabad. Marriott was recently rocked by a bomb blast that killed 53 people and injured more than 250. Rawalpindi is just a few miles from the capital. So everything should return to normal before India tours there.

UEFA Champions Leage starts off

The 2008 - 2009 UEFA Champions League was off to a flying start on Tuesday evening.Though most of the results were just as all of us expected it to be there were a few surprises. Being an ardent BPL fan I was a little disappointed with some of the results of the so called BIG FOUR.Chelsea were in breathtaking form as they destroyed Bordeux 4 - 0 with goals from Lampard, Joe Cole , Malouda and Anelka. It was a surprise that they were not able to score more.Liverpool on the other hand won 2 - 1 against Marseillle with their captain Gerrard helping himsef to two goals after going down early. The defending champions Manchester United were however held at home against Villareal. The only plus point for Sir Alex Ferguson would be that Ronaldo played his first game after the EUROS.Arsenal too drew their game against Kyiv(who have lost all their champions league matches in the last 2 seasons). However this time,in all fairness, Kyiv did play pretty well and luckily for Arsenal, Gallas was able to save their blushes with a goal in the 89th minute after going down in the 64th minute.

Federer back to winning ways!

Federer is back to his winning ways. The champion who already has 11 Grand Slam titles to his collection has re-established his dominance in the tennis world with the US Open title. The stylish Swiss beat Serbia's Djokovic in the semi-finals and Briton's Andy Murray in the path to his 12th Grand Slam. With this, he has also destroyed Murray's hopes for a first Grand Slam title. It is to be noted that the Swiss has been pushed to second place by Spain's Rafael Nadal who won two Grand Slams this season including the epic final against Federer in the Wimbledon earlier this year. While responding to the media, Federer has expressed his delight in returning to form and has added that there is still some more of them (Grand Slam titles) to come.

Bolt is the new demigod!

Usain Bolt displayed some extraordinary talent by setting the world record for 100m. The Jamaican rewrote the script for the event by dipping below the 9.7 second mark. The best thing about this win is that he was slowing down and waving at the crowd while the rest were pumping desperately for more speed. Many experts believe that he could have even clocked 9.55 seconds had he not slowed down. He did not stop with the 100m title and went on to set a yet another world record in 200m. One thing is for sure; the world has witnessed the next big thing and the future will itself speak for him.

Hamilton penalised!

Hamilton has been stripped off his Belguim GP title for illegally cutting a chicane during a duel with the reigning champion Kimi Raikonnen. As a result, Kimi's teammate Felipe Massa is granted the title and Hamilton pushed to third place. Hamilton's case came into hearing at the FIA International Court of Appeal judges in Paris. The five men bench also ruled out the appeal from McLaren for cancelling the 25 second penalty. Now Hamilton is only 1 point ahead of Massa with 76 points with only 4 races to go. The defending champion is only fourth behind Poland's Robert Kubica.

Top club transfers in Europe

Europe has had quite a good number of transfers with big names getting exchanged between big teams. Robinho, Ronaldinho, Deco, Robbie Keane, Berbatov and a number of other players occupy the top spots. ManCity managed to impress Robinho among several speculations. Ronaldinho moved to Milan after the arrival of the new manager for Barcelona. United, apart from keeping Ronaldo to themselves, have also managed to buy Bulgarian striker Berbatov from Spurs. Chelsea had a mixed transfer season with the arrival of the new coach Scholari. He has brought players such as Deco and Bosingwa from Portugal where he worked till Euro 2008. At the same time, he also lost Robinho to ManCity during the closing of the transfer window. One team which has lost a good deal of players is Arsenal with Flamini and Hleb exiting. There are also other transfers such as that of Keane to Liverpool and a few others. No doubt the coming season will be more exciting with several players exchanging jerseys.
